What is the Preferred Retinal Locus?
The preferred retinal locus (PRL) is the area of the retina that a person preferentially uses to look at an object, especially when central vision is lost. Due to certain pathologies, the macula, the central area of the retina, can be damaged, forcing the brain to rely on other, peripheral regions of the retina to maintain functional vision.

A preferred retinal locus assessment test identifies the area of the retina a person uses most when looking at an object. This method is particularly useful for people with visual disorders, such as macular degeneration or other pathologies affecting central vision. By determining the position of the preferred retinal locus, the test gives a better understanding of how a person compensates for vision loss by using a still-functional area of the retina to optimise visual perception. This can help tailor treatments, visual rehabilitation or readaptation interventions to each patient's specific needs.
How does the test work?
The test is quick and simple. The patient is placed 1.5m from the chart and asked to look straight ahead and tell us which colour and which number they see. By analysing eye fixation with technologies such as retinal cameras or eye-tracking systems, the optician can identify the precise area of the retina the patient uses.
